Wrought Iron Chandelier with Crystals

Hand-forged iron supports cascading crystal pendants on this corona chandelier, finished in verdigris green. It is built to anchor a larger space, carrying both the weight of forged metalwork and the sparkle of cut crystal, with forged foliage worked through the ring.

Verdigris with crystal

Crystal is usually hung from bronze or silver, where the metal reflects and the glass sparkles. Verdigris does something different: it absorbs light rather than bouncing it, so the crystal reads much brighter against the soft green than it would against a polished finish. The contrast is the whole idea of this piece. The verdigris is built up in layers and rubbed back over the forged foliage, so the green pools in the recesses and the high points stay closer to bare metal.

Cleaning this one carefully

Verdigris and crystal need opposite treatment, so never clean the whole fixture the same way. Wipe the crystal with a soft cloth lightly dampened with water and dry it at once. Dust the ironwork dry only, with a soft brush around the foliage. Chemical polish or glass cleaner running onto the verdigris will strip it back to bare iron, and that cannot be wiped back on.
