Windsor Spiral Lamp

A 58 cm table lamp with a spiral-carved wooden column in a walnut brown finish, standing on a 14 cm round base under a 35 cm amber fabric shade. The twist runs the full height of the column and is cut by hand after the piece comes off the lathe.

Cutting a barley twist

The spiral is carved, not turned. Once the column is round, the carver marks a helix down its length and cuts the groove by hand, keeping the pitch constant even though the column changes diameter along the way. Machine-cut spirals are mechanically identical and look it; a hand-cut one varies slightly along the run, which is what catches the light differently at each turn and gives it depth across a room.

The amber shade

An amber fabric shade does something a white one does not: it warms the light before it leaves the lamp. Combined with a warm bulb, it throws a genuinely golden light rather than a neutral one, which is why this lamp reads as cosy in the evening. It also means the lamp looks warm even switched off, because the shade carries the colour.

Choosing a bulb

Use a warm white bulb at 2700K with this lamp. The amber shade already warms the light, so a cool white bulb fights it and produces a muddy yellow-grey rather than the golden tone the shade is chosen for.

Care

Dust the spiral with a soft brush, working along the groove rather than across it so the bristles do not catch the edges. Wipe the wood with a barely damp cloth only if needed, and dry immediately. Brush or vacuum the shade on low suction.
