Verona Gold Patina Sconce

An ivy vine climbing a forged stem, finished in antique gold with a verde patina worked into the leaves. Two candle arms rise from a scalloped bowl at the base, each fitted with a drip-wax candle sleeve. It is a heritage piece rather than a decorative one, and the detail holds up at close range.

Gold and verde together

The finish on this sconce does two things at once. Antique gold is hand-applied across the stems and arms, then a verde patina is worked into the ivy leaves so they carry a green cast against the gold. That contrast is what makes the ivy read as foliage instead of as gilded metal, and because both layers are applied by hand, the balance between them shifts slightly from leaf to leaf.

The details that date it correctly

• Handcrafted ivy leaves. Each leaf is cut and veined individually, with tendrils curled separately and set into the vine.
• Drip-wax candle sleeves. The sleeves carry a moulded wax-drip texture, the detail that separates a period-correct sconce from a plain tube.
• Scalloped accent bowl. The bowl at the base is scalloped rather than plain, adding depth under the arms.
• Sturdy wall plate. A solid backplate carries the weight of the vine and the arms.

Care

Dust the leaves and tendrils with a soft brush. Avoid chemical polish, which will lift the verde patina and leave the ivy looking uniformly gold.
