TIMBER GLOW Floor Lamp

A floor lamp combining a natural timber body with warm iron accents, built to stand as a sculptural object as much as a light source. The wood carries the form and the iron holds it together at the joints, which is the same division of work used throughout our workshop.

Iron where it is needed, wood everywhere else

Iron appears on this lamp only at the collars, the fittings and the base detail, which are the points that take load and wear. Everything else is timber. That is a deliberate split rather than a decorative one: iron is stronger in thin sections and takes repeated stress at a joint far better than wood does, while wood gives the body its mass, warmth and grain. Mixing the two this way is why a handmade lamp stays tight over years rather than working loose.

Ambient light, not task light

This lamp is built to light a room softly rather than to read by. The shade throws most of the light down and out rather than concentrating it in a pool, so it fills a corner and lifts the whole space. Beside a reading chair, pair it with a smaller directional lamp rather than relying on it alone.

Choosing a bulb

A warm white bulb at 2700K to 3000K suits both the natural timber and the iron. Cool white light drains the warmth out of wood grain and turns iron accents grey, which is the opposite of what this design is trying to do.

Care

Dust the timber with a dry cloth, following the grain. Wipe the iron accents dry, and if the lamp stands somewhere humid, check them occasionally, as iron will mark where moisture sits. Keep the lamp out of direct sunlight and away from a direct air-conditioning draught.
