The Kensington Floor Lamp

A 160 cm floor lamp turned from a single hand-carved wooden column, with a solid wood top block and a 40 cm natural linen shade. The column swells at the middle and narrows at both ends, so the lamp reads as one continuous shape rather than a stack of parts.

One column, turned as one piece

A 160 cm turning is difficult work. The longer the piece on the lathe, the more it flexes under the tool, so the profile has to be cut in stages with the centre supported or the shape wanders. The result here is a single column with no joins along its length: the swell through the middle and the tapers at both ends are one continuous cut, which is why the silhouette reads cleanly from across a room.

Linen rather than cotton

The shade is natural linen. Linen has a coarser, more visible weave than cotton, so it holds a texture you can see when the lamp is lit and lets slightly more light through the sides. Against the natural wood grain it works better than a smooth fabric would, because both materials are showing their texture rather than hiding it.

Choosing a bulb

A warm white bulb at 2700K to 3000K suits both the natural wood and the linen. Cool white turns the linen grey and drains the warmth out of the grain, so it is worth avoiding on a lamp built from two natural materials.

Care

Dust the column with a dry cloth, following the grain. Brush or vacuum the linen shade on low suction; do not use a damp cloth, as linen marks. Keep the lamp out of direct sunlight, which fades linen and dries natural wood.
