Rustic rope wood wall scone

A wall light built around a length of natural jute rope, knotted and hung from a solid wood backplate, with a textured fabric shade suspended from it. The rope is structural as well as decorative: it is what the shade actually hangs from, which is why the piece has the slight irregularity of something tied rather than assembled.

Jute rope, hand-knotted

The rope is natural jute, hand-knotted at both the mount and the shade, which means no two pieces hang quite identically. That is the character of the material and the reason this design cannot be mass produced to a uniform standard. Jute also ages: it lightens slightly over the first year and takes on a softer texture, in the same way a rope handle on a piece of furniture does.

Caring for jute and fabric

Keep the rope dry. Jute absorbs moisture and will mark and weaken if it gets wet, so this piece is for dry indoor locations only, not bathrooms or covered outdoor walls. Dust the rope and the shade with a soft brush or a vacuum on low suction; do not use a damp cloth on either.
