Old World Elegance Lamp

A 23 inch table lamp with a turned solid wood column in antique brown, fluted through its widest section and standing on a carved footed base, under a 10 inch linen shade with visible seams. The proportions are classic rather than dramatic: this is a lamp built to sit quietly on a side table.

Fluting and turning on one column

The body combines two kinds of work. The profile is turned, so the swells and collars are perfectly round. The vertical fluting is then cut into the widest section by hand, and because the column curves there, each channel has to taper with it or the flutes appear to run crooked. The carved foot at the bottom is a third operation again. Three processes on a column 23 inches tall is why this reads as a made object rather than a moulded one.

A seamed linen shade

The shade has its vertical seams left visible rather than hidden inside. On a plain drum shade you would hide them; on a slightly flared shade like this they define the shape and stop it reading as a blank cylinder. Premium linen also lets a little light through the fabric itself, so the shade glows rather than only directing light up and down.

The right size for a bedside table

This is one of the few lamps in the collection genuinely sized for a bedside table. As a rule, a bedside lamp should put the bottom of the shade at roughly eye level when you are sitting up in bed, which usually means a total height of 22 to 26 inches on a standard-height table. At 23 inches this sits in the middle of that range.

Care

Dust the fluting with a soft brush along the channels, and the carved foot with the same brush. Do not use water, polish or wax on the antique brown finish. Brush or vacuum the linen shade on low suction and keep it out of direct sunlight.
