Old Timber Candle Wall Sconce

A two-light wall sconce built on a reclaimed-look timber backplate, with rusted iron candle holders rising from it and sleeves carrying a wax-drip texture. The wood is left rough rather than smooth, and the iron is left rusted rather than polished. Both are deliberate.

Wood and iron, both left alone

The backplate is a plank with its saw marks, grain and knots still showing under a light finish. The candle holders are iron finished to a rust tone rather than painted black or bronzed. Neither material is dressed up, which is the whole point of the design: it is meant to look like something salvaged from a barn and wired, not like a new fixture made to look old. That also means the grain pattern and the rust tone vary from piece to piece.

Choosing a bulb

Use a warm filament or LED filament bulb with this design. A clear filament suits the exposed candle holders and the rust finish, while a cool white bulb turns the timber grey and flattens the rust tone into plain brown.

Care

Dust the timber and the ironwork with a dry brush or cloth. Do not use polish or metal cleaner on the rust finish, as it will strip it back to bare iron. Keep the sconce away from damp walls, since a rust finish and moisture together will continue to corrode.
