Large French Wrought Iron Chandelier

A large-scale French wrought iron chandelier in matte black, taking its cues from mid-century Parisian design. Hand-forged arms curve out from a central corona with scrollwork running between them. Its size and solid iron construction make it a genuine focal point in a grand entryway or dining room, and it holds its own under a high ceiling where smaller fixtures disappear.

Forged for scale

A chandelier this size cannot be assembled from light tube and still look right. The arms here are drawn out from solid stock at the forge, which gives them the thickness to carry the sweep without sagging, and the scrollwork is set by hand between them. The matte black finish is applied over the whole frame and worked back at the edges, so the piece reads as one object rather than a painted assembly.

• Large dining rooms. Hang so the lowest point sits 75 to 85 cm above the table top.
• Living rooms with high ceilings where a standard chandelier looks undersized.

Ceiling height matters on a piece this size

Large chandeliers need clearance. As a guide, allow at least 2.4 m from the floor to the lowest point of the fixture in a walkway, and more in an entrance hall where people pass underneath.
