Ironwood Twist Lamp

A 68 cm table lamp in hand-forged wrought iron, built as a bundle of slender stems bound with a forged tie at the waist and splaying into legs at the base. There is no wood on this one: it is iron throughout, finished in antique brown, under a 30 cm amber fabric shade.

A bundle, not a column

The body is made from several separate iron rods worked individually and then gathered, so the silhouette narrows and swells where the stems draw together and spread apart. The forged band at the waist is what holds them, and it is functional as well as decorative. At the foot the same stems splay outward to form the legs, which is why the base is 20 cm across on a lamp whose body is only a few centimetres thick. The whole thing is one continuous idea from floor to shade.

Iron at table-lamp scale

Forging thin at this scale is harder than it looks. A slender rod loses heat fast, so each stem has to be worked in short passes, and all of them must end up the same length and curve or the bundle sits crooked. Hammer texture is left visible along the stems rather than filed smooth, because that is the evidence of how it was made.

A note on weight and stability

Iron gives this lamp a low centre of gravity and real weight for its size, so it stands firmly and will not be knocked over easily. It also means the base can mark a polished surface if dragged, so lift it rather than sliding it across a table.

Care

Dust the stems with a dry cloth or soft brush; the hammered texture holds dust. Do not use metal polish, as it will cut through the antique brown and leave bright patches. Keep the lamp away from damp, since iron will mark where moisture sits.
