HexaWood Wall Lamp

A geometric wall light built as an open wooden dodecahedron on a black mild steel backplate, with the bulb sitting visible inside the cage. It is the only piece in this collection that is modern rather than traditional, and at 4 by 8 by 10 inches it is compact enough for a corridor or a stairwell.

Twelve faces, every joint cut by hand

A dodecahedron has twelve pentagonal faces, which means every single joint in this frame meets at a compound angle. There are no right angles anywhere in it. Each strut has to be cut at the correct bevel in two planes and then fitted so the whole cage closes cleanly on itself. Get one angle wrong and the shape will not close. That is the entire difficulty of this design, and it is why a geometric light in wood costs more than the same shape bent from wire.

The shadow is the feature

With an open frame and an exposed bulb inside, this light projects the geometry of the cage onto the wall around it. On a plain wall you get a clean pattern of pentagons; on a textured or dark wall the effect is lost. Use a clear filament bulb rather than a frosted one, as a frosted bulb spreads the light before it reaches the frame and softens the shadow until it nearly disappears.

Where this wall light works best

• Corridors and stairwells. Compact, and the shadow pattern gives a plain wall something to look at.
• Modern and industrial interiors where a carved sconce would look out of place.
• Beside a bed or a desk, as a reading-height accent.
• Cafes, studios and offices. Matched sets are manufactured to order.
