Colette 6-Light Chandelier

A six-light chandelier with a tall turned wooden column and six slim arms sweeping down and out to wooden candle cups. There is no carving, no beadwork and no metal on show. The entire design rests on the profile of the turning, which is why it sits comfortably in rooms that are already busy.

Turning is a subtractive craft

The column on this chandelier is turned from one solid piece on a lathe, and every bead, cove and taper down its length is cut away rather than added on. That means there is no hiding a mistake: a cut made too deep cannot be filled back. The profile you see, narrow at the top, swelling at the middle, tapering to the finial, is a single continuous shape, and getting it to read as one line from across a room is the whole skill.

Why restraint is the harder choice

It is easier to sell a chandelier covered in ornament than one without, because ornament reads as value at first glance. A plain turned piece has to earn attention through proportion instead. The advantage is longevity: nothing here ties the design to a particular fashion, so it will still look right when the room around it changes.

Living with solid wood

Solid wood moves with humidity, and fine hairline movement over the first season is normal as the piece settles into your climate. Keep it out of direct air-conditioning flow and away from direct sunlight. Dust dry only.
