Ashford Wall Light

A single-light wall sconce turned from solid wood in an antique brown finish, with a shaped backplate, a straight arm and a candle cup on a turned column. At 51 cm tall and 18 cm wide it is slim and vertical, and at 1.1 kg it is light enough for almost any indoor wall.

Hand-turned, and the profile shows it

The column on this sconce is turned from a single piece of solid wood on a lathe. Every bead, cove and taper down its length is cut away rather than built up, so the profile is one continuous shape from the candle cup to the drop finial at the bottom. There is no ornament and no carving to hide behind, which means the turning itself has to be right. It is the oldest and plainest kind of woodwork in the collection, and the hardest to fake.

Using it in a run

Single-light and narrow, this design is usually ordered in multiples. Along a corridor, space them 240 to 300 cm apart at a mounting height of 165 to 175 cm. Ask for a matched set and we turn and finish them together, which matters with natural wood because the grain and tone vary between boards.

Care

Dust with a dry, soft cloth, working along the turning. The antique brown is a wood finish rather than paint, so an occasional wipe with a barely damp cloth is fine, dried immediately. Avoid furniture polish and wax.
