Wrought Iron Chandelier

A hand-forged iron chandelier built as a shallow cage: a circular band carrying six candle arms, with curved ribs rising from it to a twisted stem and a hook above. The whole fixture is low and wide, so it hangs without dropping far into the room.

The twisted stem

The stem above the body is two lengths of iron twisted around each other rather than a single bar. That is done hot, in one pass, with both bars turning together; stop halfway and the metal tears instead of twisting. It is a small detail on a large piece, and it is the part that tells you the chandelier was forged rather than assembled from tube and castings.

A cage that stays open

The ribs rising from the band are spaced wide, so the body reads as an outline rather than a solid mass. On a ceiling that already has a rose or a moulding, that matters: an open fixture sits against the plasterwork without fighting it, where a dense chandelier would cover it.

Care

Dust with a dry, soft cloth, using a brush around the twisted stem where dust collects. Avoid chemical polish on the antique finish.
