Alden Tower Floor Lamp

A 61 inch floor lamp built as a four-legged tapered tower, with two square shelves set into the frame and a 14 inch fabric shade on top. The frame narrows from a 16 inch base to the shade, so the lamp reads slim despite carrying shelves inside it.

Taper is what makes shelves work here

A straight-sided tower with shelves would read as a piece of furniture with a lamp stuck on top. Tapering the legs changes that: the widest point is at the floor, where the shelves and the stability are needed, and the frame narrows as it rises so the top half stays visually light. The result carries two 12 inch shelves without looking like a bookcase.

Two useful heights

The lower shelf sits about 13.5 inches from the floor, the upper one about 27 inches, which puts it at armrest height beside most sofas. That spacing is the practical part of the design: the upper shelf takes a cup or a phone within reach of a seated person, while the lower one takes books, a basket or a speaker.

The pull chain

The switch is a pull chain hanging from the socket under the shade rather than a foot switch on the cord. On a lamp with shelves that is the better arrangement, because reaching down to a floor switch means reaching past whatever is on the lower shelf.

What the shelves will take

These are everyday-use shelves, not load-bearing storage. Keep heavier items on the lower shelf, which also helps the lamp stand steady, and avoid putting weight high up on a 16 inch base. Protective foot pads are fitted, so the frame will not mark a wooden floor.
