Wrought Iron Cage Chandelier With 7 lights in The Gothic Style

Bold geometric ironwork forms an open cage around seven lights on this Gothic-style chandelier, finished in matte black. The light passes out through the metalwork rather than falling straight down, which is what produces the shadow pattern this piece is really bought for.

The cage is the light fitting

On most chandeliers the frame holds the bulbs and the light escapes around it. Here the cage is in front of the light source, so the ironwork projects itself onto the ceiling and walls as a pattern. That means the spacing of the bars matters as much as their shape: too tight and the room goes dark, too open and the pattern disappears. Ours is set to throw a readable shadow at normal ceiling heights, and the bars are forged square rather than round so the edges stay crisp in the projection.

Getting the shadow effect right

Use clear bulbs rather than frosted ones. A frosted bulb spreads the light before it reaches the cage and softens the shadow until it is barely visible. Clear candle bulbs keep the source small and the projection sharp. Dimmers work well on this design.
