Regal Crown Heritage Chandelier

A six-light chandelier with a heavily carved wooden column crowned by a pierced coronet, and dark iron arms scrolling out beneath it. At 28 inches wide and 26 inches tall it is a compact piece, and the carving is far deeper than the size would suggest.

The crown is carved, not cast

The pierced coronet at the top is the detail this chandelier is named for, and it is cut from solid wood rather than moulded. Piercing wood means cutting right through it and then shaping both faces, which cannot be done on a machine at this scale. Below it the column is carved in bands: acanthus, beading, fluting and a gadrooned bowl at the base, each worked separately down the length of the turning.

Wood carries the eye, iron does the work

All the ornament is in the wood. The arms are plain dark iron, scrolled and unadorned, which keeps them visually quiet so the carved column reads as the subject. It is also the practical choice: iron arms in thin sections carry the candle cups without the bulk that wooden arms would need at this width.

Cleaning deep carving

Carved wood collects dust in the undercuts where a cloth cannot reach. Use a soft, long-bristled brush and work along the carving rather than across it. Do not use water, polish or wax on the distressed finish, as any of these will darken the worn areas unevenly and flatten the effect.
