Wooden Crown Wall Lamp

A tall turned wooden column topped with a carved crown finial, with two slim metal arms sweeping down and out to candle holders. The column is the piece: the arms are deliberately thin and plain so the eye stays on the turning and the rope-twisted detail running down its length.

Turned, carved and twisted

Three separate crafts sit on this one column. The body is turned on a lathe, so its profile is a single continuous curve from the crown down to the drop finial. The crown at the top is carved after turning, cut back into the wood rather than added on. And the rope twist along the shaft is cut by hand around the turned form, which has to follow the changing diameter evenly or the spiral appears to speed up and slow down. Each one is done by a different hand in the workshop.

Why the arms are plain

A carved column with ornate arms would give you two things competing for attention and no clear subject. Keeping the metalwork simple, thin and dark lets the pale wood read first. It is also the practical choice: slim arms in metal carry the candle holders without needing the bulk that wooden arms would require at this reach.

Care

Dust with a soft dry brush, working along the rope twist rather than across it so the bristles do not catch. Do not use water, polish or wax on the distressed finish, as it will darken the worn areas and dull the gold detailing.
