Willowcrest Wall Light

A two-light sconce with a carved backplate in pale distressed wood, two black iron arms curving down and out, and strands of matching beads swagged between them. Teardrop pendants hang from the arm ends. At 48 cm tall and 36 cm wide it is wide rather than tall, which suits a space above a headboard or a console.

The beads are the detail that costs time

Each bead on the swagged strands is turned and finished separately, then threaded by hand and hung so the curve of the swag matches on both sides. The teardrop pendants at the arm ends are turned the same way. It is slow work, and it is why most sconces of this shape are sold as a plain backplate and two arms. The beads are what stop the black ironwork looking austere against the pale wood.

Candle sleeves with drip detail

The candle sleeves carry a moulded wax-drip texture rather than being plain tubes, with a brass collar at the top. It is a small thing, but it is the detail that separates a period-looking sconce from a modern fitting wearing a candle shape.

Check the projection

At 20 cm this sconce stands well out from the wall, which the arms need in order to curve properly. Keep it out of narrow corridors where people pass close to the wall, and clear of door swings.

Cleaning the beadwork

Bead strands cannot be wiped with a cloth without pulling on the threads. Use a soft brush or a hairdryer on its cool setting, working downward. Keep water off the distressed finish.
