Vintage Crown Wooden Wall Lamp

A hand-carved wooden wall lamp with a crown-shaped crest above three candle arms, finished in a vintage distressed white. At 56 cm tall and 34 cm wide it is a substantial piece, and almost all of it is carved wood rather than metal.

The carving is the product

The crest above the arms is cut from solid wood: a pierced crown of scrolls and acanthus with a finial at the top and a shell motif at the base. Piercing means cutting right through the timber and then shaping both faces, which is slow, cannot be machined at this scale, and is the reason this piece costs more than a pressed metal sconce of the same size. The three candle arms are metal in an antique finish, kept plain so they do not compete with the carving behind them.

Wall colour and the distressed finish

The white distressing is worked back to let a darker ground show through at the edges. Against a white wall that contrast is lost and the carving flattens out. This piece is at its best against colour, wood panelling or exposed brick. If your wall is white, ask us about the antique brown finish instead.

Care

Dust with a soft dry brush, working into the pierced carving where a cloth cannot reach. Do not use water, polish or wax on the distressed finish, as any of these will darken the worn edges unevenly.
