Victorian Rose Tree Lamp

A 24 inch table lamp forged as a rose tree: a trunk rising from a domed base, branching into five arms that each carry a candle light, with iron roses and leaves worked along the branches. There is no shade. The tree is the object, and the light comes from the candles held in it.

A tree, built branch by branch

Nothing about this piece is symmetrical, and that is the difficulty. Each branch is forged separately, curved to its own line, and joined to the trunk at a different height and angle, the way a real tree grows. The roses and leaves are then made individually and set along the branches where they would naturally sit, not spaced evenly. A symmetrical version of this design would be far quicker to make and would look immediately wrong.

No shade, so the light is the pattern

With five open candle lights among iron foliage, this lamp throws the shadow of its own branches onto the wall behind it. That is the effect it is built for, which means it wants a plain wall behind and a dark room to work in. On a crowded shelf or against a patterned wall the shadow work is lost.

Choosing bulbs

Five small candle bulbs sit exposed on this lamp, so the bulb is part of the design. Use warm LED candle bulbs at 2700K with a visible filament: they stay cool, which matters on an open fixture people may touch, and the filament reads correctly against the iron. Avoid frosted bulbs, which soften the branch shadows until they disappear.

A note on the base

At 6 inches the base is narrow for a 24 inch lamp that spreads 14 inches wide. It is stable on a flat surface, but keep it away from table edges and out of reach of children and pets, and lift it by the trunk rather than a branch when moving it.
