Victorian Grace Floor Lamp

A 64.5 inch floor lamp with a turned solid wood column in a pale grey-green distressed finish, gold metal accents at the collars and finial, and a 16 inch linen shade. The distressing exposes warm wood beneath the paint, so the column carries two colours without either being applied on top of the other.

Paint worked back, not painted on

The pale finish is applied over the wood and then rubbed back along every edge, ridge and high point of the turning, so the warm timber shows through wherever the surface would naturally have worn. On a turned column that means the wear follows the profile: heavier on the widest curves, lighter in the hollows. It is a slow finish to apply properly and the reason two of these are never identical.

Gold at the joints only

The metal accents sit at the collars, the finial and the top fitting, which is exactly where an old piece would have had brass. Keeping gold to those points rather than running it over the body is what stops the lamp tipping from antique into ornamental.

The foot switch

The switch sits on the cord at floor level, so it can be operated with a foot from a seated position. It is the practical choice on a tall lamp, because the alternative, a switch on the socket under the shade, means reaching up and over every time.

Care

Dust the column with a soft dry cloth, following the turning. Do not use water, polish or wax on the distressed paint, as it will darken the worn areas unevenly. Brush or vacuum the linen shade on low suction; keep it out of direct sunlight, which fades linen.
