Victorian Bloom Lamp

A 56 cm table lamp with a turned mango wood column in an antique white finish, standing on a round base under a 30 cm linen shade. The column is fluted through its widest section, with turned collars stepping down to the foot.

Fluting on a curve

Fluting is a series of parallel channels cut down the length of a column. On a straight pillar that is straightforward. On a turned column that swells and narrows, the flutes have to widen and taper with the shape or they appear to wander, so each one is cut by eye against the curve. It is the detail that separates a plain turned lamp from a considered one, and it shows most when the lamp is lit and each flute casts its own line of shadow.

Antique white over mango wood

Mango wood has a strong, irregular grain, and an antique white finish is worked back over it so the grain shows through rather than being buried. That is why this lamp reads as wood painted pale rather than as a white object. The distressing sits heaviest on the turned collars and the base rim, which is where a piece would naturally wear.

The felt-padded base

The base is felt padded underneath, which does two things: it stops the lamp sliding on a polished surface, and it protects the table from scratches. On a wooden or glass side table that matters more than it sounds, because a bare wooden base dragged even once will leave a mark.

Care

Dust the fluting with a soft brush, working along the channels. Do not use water, polish or wax on the antique white, as it will darken the distressed areas unevenly. Brush or vacuum the linen shade on low suction and keep it out of direct sunlight, which fades linen.
