Twisted Timber Floor Lamp

A 65 inch floor lamp with a spiral-carved wooden column rising from a turned circular base, topped with a premium fabric shade. The spiral runs the full height of the column, which is the single hardest thing to cut on a turning this long.

Cutting a spiral by hand

A spiral, or barley twist, is carved after the column comes off the lathe. The line has to advance at exactly the same rate the whole way up, and because the column changes diameter slightly along its length, the carver has to adjust the spacing by eye to keep the twist looking constant. Machine-cut spirals are mechanically perfect and look it. A hand-cut one has tiny variations that catch light differently along the run, which is what gives it depth from across a room.

The inline switch

The on/off switch sits on the cord rather than on the lamp body, so you can reach it from a seated position without leaning across to the base. It also means the carved column has no switch cut into it, which keeps the spiral unbroken from top to bottom.

Care

Dust the spiral with a soft brush, working along the groove rather than across it so the bristles do not catch on the edges. Do not use water, polish or wax on the antique finish. Brush or vacuum the fabric shade on low suction.
