The Emberhall Sconce

A two-light iron sconce with slim arms curving up from a fluted round backplate to turned candle cups, with small teardrop weights hanging below each arm. At 61 cm tall and 36 cm wide it is a tall, wide piece, finished by hand in antique bronze.

Forged thin, and why that is hard

The arms on this sconce are deliberately slim. That is easy to draw and difficult to make: a thin section of iron has to be worked at the right heat or it will kink at the bend instead of curving, and both arms have to match or the piece looks lopsided from the front. The teardrop weights hanging below each arm are not only decorative; they settle the eye at the bottom of a curve that would otherwise end abruptly.

Hand-finished antique bronze

The bronze is applied and worked back by hand across the arms, the backplate and the candle cups, so the colour sits deeper in the recesses and lighter on the raised edges. That is what gives an iron fixture the depth of an aged one rather than the flatness of a sprayed finish, and it is why the tone varies slightly between units.

Where this sconce works best

• Either side of a fireplace, mirror or bed, as a pair.
• Dining rooms and entrance halls. Allow at least 50 cm of clear wall width.
• Hallways. At 13 cm deep it stays reasonably clear of passing traffic.
• Hotels and restaurants. Matched sets are manufactured to order.

Care

Dust with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid metal polish, as it will cut through the hand-applied bronze and leave bright patches. If the sconce is mounted somewhere humid, wipe it dry occasionally, as iron will mark where moisture sits.
