The Artisan Arc floor lamp

An arc floor lamp built from a single sweeping length of textured iron, rising from a solid wood wedge base and curving over to a parchment shade with a black metal frame. At 62 inches tall with the shade hanging forward of the base, it lights a chair or a sofa from above without a table underneath it.

The arc has to be counterweighted

An arc lamp puts its weight out in front of its base, which is the whole engineering problem of the form. The solution here is the wedge: a solid wood block, 10 inches wide and 8 inches deep, angled so its mass sits opposite the direction of the curve. That is why the base looks the way it does. It is not a styling choice, it is what stops a 62 inch lamp tipping forward when the shade hangs a foot and a half out from the foot.

Iron and wood doing different jobs

The arm is textured iron in a black finish, because iron is the only material that holds a curve of this length in a thin section without flexing. The base is solid wood with an iron accent, because wood gives the mass and the warmth that a metal block would not. Neither material is decorative here; each is doing the job it is best at.

Placing it

Position the base so the wedge points away from the direction the arc leans, which is how it ships. Leave the shade clear of head height where people stand, since it hangs well forward of the base. On a thick rug, check the base sits flat before leaving the lamp, as an uneven footing reduces the counterweight effect.

Care

Dust the iron arm with a dry cloth; the textured finish holds dust in its surface, so a soft brush helps. Dust the parchment shade dry only, never damp. Keep the wooden base out of direct sunlight.
