Beads are what soften a metal frame

A wrought iron chandelier has hard edges and straight lines. Hanging strands of wooden beads between the arms breaks those lines with curves and gives the fixture texture at a distance, so the piece reads soft rather than skeletal. Each bead is turned and finished separately, then strung by hand, which is slow work and the reason most chandeliers of this shape are sold without beadwork.

Two finishes, deliberately mismatched

The wood is whitewashed to a pale chalky tone while the metal frame is left rust brown. Matching them would flatten the piece into a single silhouette. Leaving them different lets the pale turned column and candle cups stand forward while the frame recedes, so what you notice is the wood, not the structure holding it.

Cleaning beadwork

Bead strands collect dust along their length and cannot be wiped with a cloth without pulling on the strings. Use a soft brush or a hairdryer on its cool setting, working downward. Do not use water on the whitewashed beads, as it will mark them unevenly.
