Regal Crest Table Lamp

A table lamp built around a carved acanthus crest rather than a turned column, rising from a fluted plinth on a clear base, under a flared fabric shade. It is the most sculptural of our table lamps: the body is a piece of carving first and a lamp stem second.

Carved, not turned

Every other table lamp in this collection is turned on a lathe, which gives a round, symmetrical column. This one is carved from solid timber into an acanthus leaf form, with the leaf tips curling outward and the surfaces shaped from all sides. That is bench carving: slower, done by hand with chisels, and impossible to repeat exactly. Two of these placed side by side will differ in the sweep of the leaves.

A clear base under a heavy form

The carved body sits on a clear base, which is what stops the lamp looking bottom-heavy. Without it, a solid carved form on a solid plinth would read as one dense block. The clear base lifts the carving visually, so the leaf shape appears to float above the table rather than sit on it.

Placing it

Because the carving is the point, this lamp needs clear space around it and a plain surface behind. On a crowded console with photographs and objects the acanthus form gets lost. Give it its own area of table and a wall rather than a window behind it.

Care

Dust the carving with a soft brush, working into the leaf undercuts where a cloth cannot reach. Do not use water, polish or wax on the antique finish. Lift the lamp by its plinth rather than by the carved leaves, which are the thinnest part of the body.
