Nature's Reach Floor lamp

A floor lamp built around a single piece of naturally shaped solid wood, set into a heavy square base, with the shade hung from the curve at the top rather than balanced on it. At 170 cm it stands at eye level, and no two are the same shape.

The wood decides the lamp

This design starts with the timber rather than a drawing. A piece is chosen for its natural curve, dried, then cleaned and finished by hand so the grain, the burls and the darker heartwood stay visible. The lamp is built around whatever shape that piece has, which means the lean, the twist and the height of the curve differ from one lamp to the next. Two of these standing side by side will not match, and that is the point of the design rather than a variation to apologise for.

Why the base is heavy

A 170 cm lamp whose mass leans to one side needs a counterweight or it will tip. The base is a solid 30 by 30 cm block for exactly that reason. It is also why this lamp does not need to sit against a wall: it is stable free-standing, which suits it to a corner of a room or beside a sofa rather than only against a skirting board.

Ordering one

Since every piece of wood is different, tell us the height and lean you want and we will select a branch to suit, or send photographs of what is in the workshop so you can choose the actual piece before it is made. For matched pairs we select two from the same tree, which is as close as this design gets to identical.

Care

Dust with a dry cloth, following the grain. The natural finish can take an occasional wipe with a barely damp cloth, dried immediately. Keep the lamp out of direct sunlight and away from a direct air-conditioning draught, both of which dry natural wood faster than it should dry.
