Iron Crown Floor Stand

A hand-forged iron floor candelabra standing 112 cm tall, with a hammered ring carrying candle spikes above a three-legged scrolled base. This is a candle stand, not an electric lamp: there is no bulb, no socket and no cable, and the candles sit on spikes rather than in holders.

Hammered by hand, not pressed

The ring and the legs carry a hammered texture put in at the forge, not stamped on afterwards. You can see it in the irregularity: the dimples vary in depth and spacing because each one is a separate blow. A pressed or rolled texture repeats exactly, and once you have seen both, the difference is obvious across a room under candlelight, which is the only light this piece is ever seen in.

Spikes rather than cups

The candles mount on 18 cm spikes with a 9.5 cm tray beneath each. Spikes hold a pillar candle more securely than a cup and take any diameter above the spike itself, so you are not restricted to one candle size. The trays catch the wax. It is the older way of doing it and the more practical one.

Where this candelabra works best

• Beside a fireplace or in a room corner. At 6.2 kg on a 48 cm base it is stable on its own.
• Entrance halls and landings.

Using it safely

This holds open flames at 112 cm, which is roughly chest height. Keep it clear of curtains, furniture and anything overhanging, allow at least 60 cm above the candle tips, and place it where it cannot be knocked in a walkway. Never leave lit candles unattended. LED pillar candles remove the risk and sit on the spikes the same way.

Care

Let spilled wax harden and lift it off the trays rather than scraping it warm. Dust the ironwork dry. Do not use metal polish, as it will cut through the matte black and leave bright patches.
