Heritage Wood Chandelier

A six-light chandelier carved from solid wood, with a turned central column, acanthus leaf crowns and arms that sweep out and up in a single curve. The rustic distressed finish is the defining feature: it is worked back by hand so the piece reads as a French antique rather than as new joinery.

Distressing done properly

A distressed finish is easy to do badly. Sand it evenly and it looks like a manufacturing fault; overdo it and it looks like damage. The wear on this chandelier is placed where a genuinely old piece would have worn it: along the top edges of the leaf carving, at the high points of the turned column, and on the candle collars where hands would have reached. Everything else is left alone. That is why it reads as age rather than as a surface effect, and it is also why no two pieces finish identically.

The carving

The acanthus leaves crowning the column and the collars under each candle are carved rather than moulded, which is visible in the undercuts: a moulded leaf has to release from a mould, so it cannot have the deep relief and the curled-back tips this one has. The central column is turned on a lathe from a single solid piece.

Living with solid wood

Solid wood moves with humidity, and fine hairline movement at the joints over the first season is normal as the piece settles into your climate. Keep the chandelier out of direct air-conditioning flow and away from direct sunlight. Dust dry only. Do not use furniture polish or wax on the distressed finish, as it will darken the worn areas and flatten the effect.
