Harmony Floor Lamp

A 160 cm floor lamp turned from solid wood into a sequence of swelling and narrowing forms, with a soft fabric shade on top and a matte black base. There is no carving and no ornament. The shape is a single continuous turning, and that is the whole design.

A silhouette that has to be right

This profile gives the maker nowhere to hide. Three swellings of different sizes, each narrowing to a waist before the next begins, all on one column: if the proportions between them are even slightly wrong the lamp looks unbalanced, and there is no carving or colour to distract from it. It is turned from a single solid piece with a smooth finish, so the grain runs unbroken through every curve.

Stability

At 7.5 kg on a 28 cm base this lamp is stable on a hard floor, but the base is relatively narrow for its height. On a thick rug or a very soft carpet, check that it sits level before leaving it, and keep it out of walkways where it could be caught by a foot.

Care

Dust the column with a dry cloth, following the grain. The walnut finish can take an occasional wipe with a barely damp cloth, dried immediately. Brush or vacuum the shade on low suction. Keep the lamp out of direct sunlight, which dries wood and fades fabric.
