French Manor Double Arm Sconce

A two-light sconce carved from solid wood, with a fleur-de-lis crest rising above a shell-shaped base and two arms curving out to candle holders. At 52 cm tall and 34 cm wide it is a full-size feature sconce, and the whole body is carved timber rather than a moulded composite.

Solid wood, and why that matters here

A shape like this is far easier to produce in resin from a mould. Carving it from solid wood means the crest, the shell and the scrollwork are each cut by hand into a single block, following the grain, with the undercuts worked from behind. You can see the difference at close range: carved wood has crisp shadow lines in the recesses and visible grain running through the ornament, where a moulded piece has soft edges and no grain at all. It also means each one varies slightly.

Five finishes to choose from

This design is made in five finishes rather than one, so it can be matched to the room rather than the other way round.

• Antique ivory — pale and warm, the standard finish shown
• Antique grey — cooler, for contemporary and coastal interiors
• Walnut — dark, rich, for panelled and heritage rooms
• Natural wood — clear finish with the grain fully visible
• Distressed white — worked back for a French country look

Check the projection

This sconce stands 19 cm out from the wall, which is deeper than most. Keep it out of narrow corridors where people pass close to the wall, and clear of door swings.
