Elowen Wooden Sconce

A minimal wall sconce built from three turned wooden spheres stacked on a slim stem, with an opal glass globe sitting at the top. There is no carving, no distressing and no metalwork on show. It is the most contemporary piece in this collection and the only one that would sit comfortably in a plain modern room.

Turning, reduced to its simplest form

Three spheres and a stem sounds easy and is not. A turned sphere has to be true from every angle, and three stacked in a line show immediately if one is slightly out of round or if the diameters do not step down evenly. There is no ornament here to distract the eye from an error. The wood is left in its natural finish with the grain visible, because on a shape this plain the grain is the only decoration.

The opal globe

The shade is opal glass, not clear or frosted. Opal is denser, so the bulb inside is completely hidden and the whole globe glows evenly rather than showing a bright spot. That is what makes this sconce comfortable at close range, and it is why it works beside a bed or a reading chair where a visible filament would be tiring.

Care

The opal globe lifts off for cleaning; wash it in warm water and dry it fully before refitting. Dust the wooden body with a dry cloth. Because the finish is natural rather than painted, an occasional wipe with a barely damp cloth is fine, dried immediately.
