Celestia Classic Sconce

A single-light wall sconce with an ornate carved wooden frame in white, and a frosted glass shade set into the centre. The scrollwork is cut into solid wood rather than moulded, and the white finish is applied over it so the carved relief still reads clearly.

Carved wood, painted white

White is an unforgiving finish on carving. A painted surface reflects light evenly, so any softness in the cutting shows immediately, and there is no grain or patina to distract the eye. That means the relief has to be cut deep enough to hold its own shadow: the scroll edges are undercut so they cast a line even under flat daylight. It is the reason this piece still reads as carved rather than as a smooth white shape.

The glass shade

A frosted glass shade sits in the centre of the frame, so the bulb is hidden and the light comes out soft rather than as a visible point. That makes this one of the few sconces in the collection that is comfortable to sit directly beside, and it is why it suits bedrooms and reading corners.

Wall colour

A white carved piece needs a coloured or textured wall behind it. Against a white wall the frame merges into the background and the carving disappears. Against colour, wood panelling or exposed brick it reads properly. If your wall is white, ask us about a darker finish.

Care

Dust the carved frame with a soft dry brush, working into the scrollwork where a cloth cannot reach. The glass shade lifts out for cleaning; wash it separately in warm water and dry it fully before refitting. Keep water off the painted wood.
