Casa Belle Vintage Sconce

A two-light wall sconce with a turned wooden column in a white distressed finish, iron arms scrolling out to either side, and beige cotton shades above. The shades are what separate it from the rest of this collection: the light is diffused rather than exposed, which makes it a reading light as well as a decorative one.

Cotton shades change how the light behaves

A bare candle bulb throws light upward and sideways and puts a bright point in your eye. A cotton shade holds the light inside, lets a soft glow through the fabric and directs the rest down onto whatever is below. That is why this design works beside a bed or an armchair where an open sconce would be uncomfortable to sit next to. The beige cotton also warms the colour of the light slightly, which suits the white distressed wood.

Mounting

This sconce projects 8 inches from the wall, which is more than most, so keep it out of narrow passages where people brush past. Beside a bed, mount the centre 120 to 140 cm from the floor so the shade sits at shoulder height when you are sitting up.

Caring for the shades

The cotton shades are removable for cleaning. Dust them with a soft brush or a vacuum on low suction; do not use a damp cloth, as cotton marks and the water can reach the frame. Dust the wooden body dry only, and keep water off the distressed finish.
