Casa Bella Table Lamp

A 61 cm table lamp with an open iron scroll body rising from a stepped square base, under a 28 cm square fabric shade. The scrollwork is the whole structure: there is no column, just two mirrored curves of iron meeting at the centre.

An open body, and a square shade above it

Pairing an open scrolled body with a square shade is a deliberate contrast. The scrolls are all curve and negative space; the shade is flat-sided and geometric. Putting them together stops the lamp reading as purely traditional, which is what an open scroll body with a round shade would do. It also means the silhouette changes completely depending on whether you look at it from the front or the side.

Wrought iron, worked thin

Each scroll is drawn out and rolled by hand at the forge. Thin iron loses heat quickly, so a curve like this has to be completed in a short working window or the metal stops moving and kinks. Both halves must match, since the body is symmetrical and any difference between the two sides shows immediately against the wall behind it.

Where this lamp works best

• Console tables and side tables, as a pair.
• Against a plain wall. The open scrollwork reads best with light behind it.
• Studies, libraries and traditional living rooms.
• Hotel lobbies and guest rooms. Matched sets are manufactured to order.

Placing it

Because the body is open, what sits behind this lamp becomes part of how it looks. Against a plain wall the scrolls read as a clean dark outline. Against a bookcase or a patterned wallpaper the shape disappears into the background. It is worth deciding the position before choosing it.

Care

Dust the scrollwork with a soft brush, following the curves. Do not use metal polish, as it will cut through the antique bronze and leave bright patches. The metal base can mark a polished surface if dragged, so lift rather than slide it.
