Blackthorn Library Lamp

A table lamp with an open spiral iron stem rising from a stepped square base, topped with a scrolled finial and a flared premium fabric shade. The spiral is open rather than solid, so you see straight through the body of the lamp.

An open spiral is harder than a carved one

A twist cut into a solid column is one thing. This is another: the iron is formed into a freestanding helix with nothing inside it, so the coil has to hold its own shape and carry the weight of the shade above. Each turn must sit at the same pitch and diameter as the last, and there is no core to true it against. Get one turn wrong and the whole stem leans. That is why open spiral work is uncommon at this size.

The scrolled finial

The finial at the top is a small curl of iron, forged to echo the spiral below it. It is the detail that finishes the lamp: without it the stem would simply stop where the shade begins. On a piece this plain, that one flourish is doing a lot of work.

Placing it against the light

Because the stem is open, this lamp looks quite different depending on what is behind it. Against a pale wall the spiral reads as a clean dark line. Against a window or a dark bookcase the shape is lost. It is worth deciding where it will stand before choosing it.

Care

Dust the spiral with a soft brush, following the coil. Do not use metal polish, as it will cut through the hand-applied antique finish and leave bright patches. The iron base is heavy enough to mark a polished table if dragged, so lift rather than slide it.
