Rosevine Chandelier

Forged roses and trailing vines cover this chandelier's frame almost completely, worked in warm gilded tones so the foliage reads gold rather than dark. Candle arms emerge from the growth rather than sitting above it, which is what makes the piece look grown rather than assembled.

When the foliage becomes the frame

On most floral chandeliers the flowers are decoration added to a visible structure. Here the vines carry the piece: they wind around the column, form the arms, and close over the joints, so there is very little bare iron left to see. That takes far more forging than a plain frame with flowers attached, because every vine has to be structural as well as decorative. Each rose is built petal by petal and set into the vine where a bloom would naturally sit.

• Dining rooms. Hang so the lowest point sits 75 to 85 cm above the table top.

Cleaning dense foliage

A piece with this much detail collects dust in places a cloth will not reach. Use a soft, long-bristled brush and work downward through the vines, then follow with a dry cloth on the open surfaces. Avoid chemical polish, which will dull the gilding and pool in the recesses where it cannot be wiped away.
