Fleur-de-Lis Wall Light

A two-light wall sconce with a carved fleur-de-lis backplate in mango wood and two off-white linen shades above dark metal arms. At 56 cm tall and 39 cm wide it is a large piece, and the linen shades make it one of the few in this collection that gives soft, usable light rather than an exposed candle flame.

Mango wood, and why it suits carving

The backplate is mango wood, which is denser and more even-grained than most softwoods and takes a carved edge cleanly without tearing. That matters on a fleur-de-lis: the motif is all crisp points and tight curls, and a coarse-grained timber would blur them. It also takes the bronze-with-aged-patina finish evenly, so the raised carving catches light while the recesses stay dark.

Linen shades change the light

Off-white linen diffuses the light and hides the bulb, so this sconce can sit beside a bed or a chair where an open flame-style fitting would be uncomfortable to look at. The linen also warms the colour slightly, which suits the bronze finish underneath.

Caring for the linen shades

Dust the shades with a soft brush or a vacuum on low suction. Do not use a damp cloth on linen, as it marks and the moisture can reach the frame. The wooden backplate should be dusted dry only.
